This is the motivation for so many bands these days. "The Machine" which was Record Studios dropping payola is a DJ's lap in exchange for air-time is gone. So, a manager/producer can no longer run a hero up the pop-charts. Now the mega-label/media Ogres hand-pick "artists" for cuteness and then sledge-hammer the lip-synched music into the heads of clueless, young sheeple.

Thank god for the bands who make their music public here at LMA. Young people(the cunts who ruined Jonathan's scene) actually have a chance to discover honest music.

Indeed, there is a large counter-current to this promotional method in the form of independent record labels and bands allowing taping, but just turn on the radio - the machine is still operational.. it's just not making as much money as it used to.

I am aware that this is happening now, and has been happening as long as I've been aware (mid-90s), but isn't this the very same procedure that has been in place since the 50s?

Sure, for a while, honestly good musicians were able to break through into the pop world, but hasn't this hand-picked entertainer idol bullshit been going on for quite some time?

Thankfully, sound recording technology is now empowering the masses instead of the industry bosses with money to throw around. These days anyone who can afford a laptop, a MIDI adapter, some microphones, etc. is a producer and can run a mobile studio.

Agreed, these tactics are not new. Perhaps the percentage of "music" people on the production/distribution side back then was greater? As a result, the labels were more discriminating about what they threw against the wall. Talent seems to be less a factor in choosing recording stars these days. I think all the fake singing we see proves that.

As for radio, it's biz as usual. Take the old stuff pay royalties and sell some ads. The new stuff is, by design, ever-changing. The sheer numbers of "pop-stars" is crazy. More flashes in the pan, fewer performers who last.

Of course all of this comes from a deadhead who likes electric guitars and soulful, overweight back-up singers. Odds are I'm talkin' outta my dark hollow.

Lip-syncing was probably much more difficult in the 50's...

I am really curious as to how the record industry will respond to the rapid increase in access to home recording technology.

Gonna post up a little rant that I did about a month ago about this topic...
